Massachusetts legislature approves replacing the elected Boston School Committee with an appointed board.

The legislature approves a home rule petition replacing the 13-member elected committee with a seven-member board appointed by the mayor. According to a provision in the bill, Boston voters must decide whether to retain the appointed board in 1996.* The new committee takes office in January 1992.*
